 The clips are useful as they clip around the bobbin and stops the thread unwinding. Also each clip fits together to make one big bobbin storage. 

 Using incorrect bobbins can affect the stitch quality. To retain good tension on the bobbin only use one continuous thread. Never wind more than one continuous thread on a bobbin as this will cause tension and stitching problems.
